ALWAYS IN MOTION: AT HOME WITH AMANDA SCHULMAN

Author, producer and co-founder of media house Perfect Day, Amanda Schulman has built a life around storytelling – and her home is one of them. Her design philosophy is rooted in movement and the idea that your home should bring your dreams to life. For her, it’s a place of comfort, creativity and connection. We visited Amanda in her Stockholm apartment to talk about flowers, watching tv in the kitchen, and why her home is always a work in progress.

What does your home mean to you, and how would you describe it?

I think it’s cozy and homey. And also beautiful. My home means almost everything to me. If I don’t feel comfortable in my home, it affects me deeply – because it’s where I live, work, and spend time with the people I love. My home is my safe haven, but I also want it to spark joy and creativity. And I want it to be a place where I can rest and recharge.

How would youdescribe your interior philosophy?

That’s hard, but I think it’s about having a home in motion. I feel good when things change, so for me, interior design is an on going project. And I think you should see your home as something that brings your dreams to life. If you want to spend more time with friends, make space for that. If you’re single and want to meet someone, get a double bed.

What are your favorite materials?

Textiles and flowers. They bring softness and life to all the hard surfaces like walls, floors, and some furniture. And it’s so easy to refresh a room with textiles and flowers – through colour or shape, so you don’t get tired of it.

How do you create the perfect living room?

The living room is the hardest space, I think. Maybe because it has to be super comfortable, hold “ugly” things like TVs, and still be beautiful. But I have a lot of books in my living room, and that adds a cozy touch.

Is table setting important to you? If so, how do you usually set the table?

Setting the table is one of my favorite things – it’s a hobby! A little moment for myself with something that’s meant to make others happy. It’s not rocket science, but you can do a lot just with flowers and textiles. And you can challenge your creativity by using whatever you find beautiful – fruit, vegetables, branches, stones, or anything at all.

How have you styled your bedroom for a good night’s sleep?

I try not to keep too many things in the bedroom, and I go for calming colours and patterns. And high-quality sheets and a reading lamp!

How do you choose products for your home – aesthetics, function, feeling?

I try to think about all three, even though I lean more naturally toward aesthetics and feeling. But I like the idea of also thinking about what you actually do in aspace – not just how it looks.

What inspires you– in your work, your home, your life?

That’s another hobby of mine: being inspired. I love it, and I look for inspiration everywhere – in people, experiences, relationships, and culture. And in nature!

What’s your favorite room in your home?

It’s our kitchen. That’s where we all spend time, pretty much all the time. Maybe because you can do so many different things there. We have a TV and a fire place, and you can cook, do homework, and hang out – morning, afternoon, and evening.

What does a typical dinner look like at your place?

On weekdays, the family hangs out in the kitchen from the afternoon on, and we eat dinner together. On weekends, I sit at the kitchen island with a glass of wine and chat with my husband while he cooks for me. When we invite friends over for dinner, we set the table in the dining room.
