THE MEMORY OF A SMELL

Why a scent will take you back further than a photograph ever could.

Your nose is like a muscle, the more you use it, the stronger it gets. Smell is the racehorse of our senses. Sight, touch, hearing, taste – none of them stand a chance when it comes to creating a memory or an emotion. That's not poetry. It's biology.

Wired straight to memory
Most senses take the long way to the brain. Smell doesn't. It runs straight to the limbic system – the amygdala and the hippocampus, the regions responsible for emotion and memory. It's also the first sense we develop. By twelve weeks in the womb, it's already fully formed. And once we are born, smell and emotion team up to help us understand and create our new world.

Why a scent, not a sight
This is why it's the smell of a newly lit fire – not the fire itself – that can put you straight back to the childhood ski hut with a cup of hot chocolate in hand. A photograph shows you a memory. A scent puts you inside it.

What Givaudan Paris knows about this

Givaudan Paris is the legendary French perfumer behind the Singular perfumes and personal care products. Founded in 1768, with roots in Grasse stretching back 250 years, Givaudan has spent that time studying exactly this. ”When we experience a scent for the first time, our brain registers the impression evoked and stores it for years, ready to bring us back to a memorable experience at a moment's notice”, the house explains.

Digging into your own memories
When creating scents for our products we start by digging into our own memories trying to find some of our favourite scents. The L'ensemble Eau de Parfum collection consists of eight distinct scents that work brilliantly on their own, all developed together with Givaudan Paris. At the same time they are designed, down to the molecular level, to pair and harmonize perfectly with each other in layers.

A centuries-old technique
Creating a layering system is the holy grail of scent-making. It is a centuries-old technique that elevates fragrance to a whole new level, enabling endless possibilities. By layering two or more fragrances on the skin a symphony of notes emerges that’s completely unique to every person.
