DRESSED TO THRILL
The Singular Society Heritage series: The History of the Trench Coat.
The Singular Society Heritage Series is an encyclopaedic collection where we delve deep into the history of iconic garments, explaining how we honour the heritage of craftsmanship and quality in the original pieces.
While many believe the iconic trench coat was born in the trenches of World War I, its origins actually trace back to the early 1820s when inventors Charles Macintosh and Thomas Hancock pioneered waterproof coats, laying the groundwork for what would soon become a timeless wardrobe staple.
Originally dubbed the 'mack', the rain-repellent garment was a favourite among well-dressed gentlemen, perfect for outdoor living and military service. As technology advanced in the late 1800s, John Emary and Thomas Burberry refined the design, introducing Aquascutum’s breathable fabric and Burberry's signature gabardine innovation. The modern trench coat was on its way.
During WWI, the trench coat was worn by officers as a symbol of distinction. Its double-breasted design, D-ring belt, and practical details provided protection in the trenches.
With its association with wartime heroism, the trench coat was soon embraced by Hollywood stars like Humphrey Bogart in Casablanca and Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, adding both power and elegance to the silver screen. An icon was born.
But what defines a truly high-quality trench coat? The answer is its attention to detail, craftsmanship, and timeless design. The fabric should be a tightly woven cotton twill that offers durability and water resistance. Look for features like reinforced stitching, quality hardware, and a tailored fit that flatters the silhouette. A well-made trench coat is an investment piece that will withstand the test of time, serving as a versatile staple in any wardrobe.
The Singular Society trench coat honours all the features of a high-quality trench coat: the heritage, the history, the fabric and the craftsmanship. Senne Huveneers explains the details behind the coat of coats.
